The Facebook community recently has been given a way to compare their energy usage with their “friends.” The social energy app was launched April 3, 2012 and is available on Facebook, the NDRC website, OPOWER and 16 utility companies around the US.
There are about 20 million households served by these utilities and customers can have their energy usage data put in automatically by these utilities. The rest of those who want to make saving energy a friendly game with their family and others on Facebook can put their monthly information in using their electric bill. Some may want to keep this information to themselves, but once those competitive juices start flowing people may just forgo a little privacy.
The app will show you how your home ranks against similar homes throughout the country and it also offers energy saving tips and a way to share your tips with others. This is a great way for people to judge themselves and their habits to see if they are doing all they can to save money and give the environment a break at the same time. It is only showing energy usage, not how much you are paying, but each individual will be able to guess that fewer kilowatts used means less money going out the door.
The summer months will be heating up the competition as this is the time of year that puts the pressure on the power grids for the whole country. By contacting our Lorain County HVAC contractors you could get the jump on the “competition.” We can give your A/C unit a performance check that will improve efficiency and you can use the app to monitor your savings all summer long.
